A Career in Cybersecurity: An Interview with Dr. Shifa Cyclewala

Jun 7, 2024

Q) What inspired you to pursue a career in cyber security?

I was always fascinated by technology. I was interested in coding since my school days. With the advent of learning programming it was not too late that I realized the importance of security. The dynamic nature of cybersecurity, where I can continuously learn and adapt to new challenges is inspiring. My fascination with how systems and networks operate and the opportunity to protect information and combat cyber threats deeply intrigued me. Additionally, the importance of safeguarding sensitive data and systems motivates me to contribute positively to society by ensuring security and trust in this digital world.

Q) How did you get started in the field of cyber security?

I have been passionate about cybersecurity since my early days at my alma mater, where I enjoyed experimenting with and learning about hacking tools. I vividly recall my first hack, which involved using Aircrack to steal a Wi-Fi password so I could download and read more hacking books, as internet access was limited at that time.

In my second year of college, I had the opportunity to work with a cybersecurity company, solidifying my decision to pursue a career in this field. However, due to the lack of cybersecurity opportunities in my hometown of Gujarat, I moved to Mumbai. Despite concerns from my family about my safety and security, especially as a woman, I successfully joined an IT company.

Despite having a decent salary and a comfortable working environment, I felt something was missing—guidance. With no engineering background in my family, I was motivated to provide free weekend guidance classes, awareness sessions, and workshops on cybersecurity using my own salary. My goal was to ensure others wouldn't face the same challenges I did.

As soon as I started, numerous individuals joined the sessions, creating a platform for shared learning and growth. Recognizing the significant impact our work had on individuals, albeit on a small scale, I decided to pursue this full-time. I quit my job and invested all my savings into establishing Hacktify Cyber Security as a limited liability partnership company.

Leaving a secure job to start a new company was challenging, especially with the added responsibility of caring for my family. Competing with top institutes in Mumbai was no easy task, but through hard work and dedication, Hacktify has become the highest-rated institute in the field. Our efforts received a major boost when Hacktify Cyber Security was selected by Startup India as the Most Emerging Startup, earning us a recognition certificate followed by various other rewards and recognition.

Q) What challenges did you face when you began your career, and how did you overcome them?

When I started my career in cybersecurity, the main challenges were keeping up with rapid technological changes and staying updated with the latest threats. I overcame them by prioritizing continuous learning, attending conferences, and networking with industry experts to stay ahead. I also pursued my Phd and certifications, sought mentorship, engaged in hands-on projects, and actively participated in cybersecurity communities. This proactive approach enabled me to build a solid foundation and remain current in the field.

Q) What are the most important skills someone needs to develop to succeed in cyber security?

To succeed in cybersecurity, individuals need technical expertise in operating systems, programming languages, and security tools, along with effective communication. Problem-solving abilities are essential for analyzing complex issues and developing effective solutions. Strong communication skills are crucial for conveying technical information, collaborating with teams, and educating stakeholders. Adaptability, attention to detail, and a continuous learning mindset are also vital for keeping pace with evolving threats and technologies.
